Your Life Is Your Choice

And it’s those very choices that will either work in harmony with the natural laws of the universe or will act dysfunctionally against these very same laws.

How To Stay In the Moment

Have you ever felt like your life is spinning too fast or out of control? Do you have difficulties relaxing, because your mind is filled with “what if-” and “if only”-thoughts? Or do you simply have problems being present in the moment with your family and friends?  If so, you could definitely benefit from practising mindfulness.

Put very simply, mindfulness is the art of staying in the moment – the art of accepting what it is.  Mindfulness was originally developed by Jon KabatZinn in order for him to assist and help individuals with a wide range of medical issues. The practise is based on Buddhist philosophy and involves meditation, yoga and stretching techniques as well as some principles of cognitive behavioural therapy.

So what is mindfulness? Well, contrary to popular belief mindfulness is not just about learning how to relax. It is a way of being, about learning to be in the moment – in the Now – with help of observation. By practising mindfulness you become aware of what you are experiencing with acceptance, not trying to change things as they are at any given moment – the way they are right now – for better or for worse. It might sound strange or difficult to practise, and at times it is. I’ve learned from experience that this applies especially for very ambitious individuals whom been thought that you need to do whatever it takes in order to get what you want. The ones who feel the need to have control over their lives and by trying to do so, sadly live their life days, months or even years ahead of the present moment while the years pass.

Mindfulness is not about letting go of your own responsibilities for your own life or to just let things be as they are. It is more about doing your best at every given moment and feel satisfied with and accept that. Mindfulness gives everyone the ability to live life to the full and everyone can have it. The only thing you need to do is to investigate your mind and harmonise your senses.

How to Keep Your Mind Sharp and Help Your Inspiration & Creativity

There are several factors in life that can make you feel as dull as a brick.

  1. Take Care of Your Body

Most of us don’t have the time, resources or good will to be health nuts, however there are some simple things nearly everyone can do to keep their body fit to a certain extent, which will help the mind as well.

Romans used  to say that one should  have a “A healthy mind in a healthy body”, and to keep up to that proverb you can do a few simple things –  dedicate half an hour once or twice weekly for jogging, walk to work if that’s an option, or at least walk a mile every day, in whatever pace you want.

Reduce caffeine intake 4 to 5 hours before bed – this will make your sleep quite a lot healthier and will make you more productive in the morning.

  1. Read, Read, Read

A piece of advice you likely see quite too often.

It’s very likely that you’re already doing it, as you’re reading this article right now. But to keep up the good work, try finding lots of information and sifting through what might be relevant and interesting for you. Don’t be afraid to dig further into complex topics.

The other way is also an option – read less and more general information but for a variety of different topics. Once you explore lots of different things, you’ll be able to cross-reference and abstract them in your head, allowing for better creativity.

  1. Give Your Mind Some Rest from Time to Time

Leading psychologists suggest dedicating ten minutes per day to doing absolutely nothing.

That’s right, basically staring at the ceiling!

One might wonder what the purposes of that would be at first glance, but when you think about it , this is actually the most primitive form of meditation that anyone can do!

By doing this you’ll help prevent your mind from overloading.

  1. Find New Challenges, New Hobbies and New Tasks

An old proverb says that the mind is like the blade – it gets rusty if it’s not used. So to keep your mind from “catching rust” you’ll need to present it with a variety of new difficulties and challenges.

What better way to do that than to learn how to play an instrument for example? Or start a new hobby, like knitting, origami or any sort of applied art.

There are a plethora of tutorials and helpful communities online, and for most hobbies you’ll need to invest only a little money on the basic necessities you’ll need at first.

You can also find a pen pal to help you learn another language.

The opportunities are all around you!

2. Is This Real?

One simple trick that forensic psychology graduate programs recommend to immediately defuse negative thoughts is to ask a simple question: Are these thoughts true?

Many times, we get caught up in negative thoughts that aren’t really true. Perhaps you hear a voice saying that something terrible is going to happen or that you aren’t capable of doing something.

Before allowing that thought to take hold, stop for a moment and consider whether it’s really true. Unless there is a compelling reason for the thought to be true, dismiss it.

Turn it into something positive: “I’m going to try my best on this project” instead of “I’m doomed for failure.”

3. Make a Gratitude List

It’s quite simple: When you acknowledge and feel grateful for what you have, you don’t have time for thinking about what you lack.

And if you’re like most people, when you start listing everything good in your life, you’ll immediately start feeling better and more positive.

4. Help Others

Helping others accomplishes several things when it comes to shifting how you think.

First, giving back to those who are less fortunate — or even just easing someone else’s load — provides perspective.

You might be frustrated with your job and wish you had a bigger or nicer place to live, but spending some time volunteering in a homeless shelter can help you see how much you have.

Second, being kind and helpful to others increases the chance they will extend the same courtesy to you, helping you feel better and more positive about your life and the world around you.

5. Picture Your Safe Place

There’s no denying it: Maintaining a positive, upbeat attitude is good for your health. Multiple studies and anecdotal evidence have proven those who stay optimistic, even when facing setbacks, are generally healthier and less stressed.

Sometimes, taking a short “mental break” can help you get your thoughts back on a positive track. Taking a few moments to slow down and picture yourself in a relaxing place — whether that’s the beach, the mountains or simply a quiet room — helps you refocus your thoughts and clear out any worries or negative feelings that threaten to take over.

Focus on your breathing, and visualize yourself relaxing. Once you do so, you’ll feel the negativity floating away.
